Sprats are small fish which are part of the herring family. Sprats are recognised for their nutritional value as they contain high levels of polyunsaturated fats including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are considered to be beneficial to a dog’s diet.
The amounts that are found in sprat are comparable to Atlantic Salmon, and up to seven times higher in EPA and DHA than common fresh fillets of gilt-head bream.
Sprat contain approximately 1.43g/100g of these polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids have been found to help prevent mental, neural, and cardiovascular diseases.
How are sprats beneficial to the health of your dog?
1. They are great for the heart
It’s no coincidence that fish-eating Inuit populations in the Arctic have low levels of heart disease; seafood is low in saturated fat and high in omega-3, (which can both) protect the heart from disease and lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood. One study has even suggested that an extra portion of fish every week can cut risk of heart disease in half.
2. Clearing the vessels
Eating fish can improve circulation. The EPA and DHA – omega-3 oils – in seafood can save the body from having to produce eicosanoids, a hormone-like substance which can make dogs more likely to suffer from blood clots and inflammation.
3. Joint benefits
Eating fish as a regular part of a balanced diet has been shown to ease the symptoms and prevent different types of arthritis in dogs.
4. Improves the eyesight
Eating oil-rich fish regularly can help to keep the eyes bright and healthy. Fish also contain retinol, a form of vitamin A which boosts night vision.
5. Essential nutrients
Seafood provides the body with many essential nutrients which keep dogs running smoothly. These nutrients include iodine, selenium, zinc and potassium. Iodine is important for the thyroid gland, and selenium makes enzymes which can help to protect against cancer. Fish are also excellent sources of many vitamins, including vitamins A and D.
6. Good for the lungs
A number of studies have indicated that fish help to protect the lungs.
7. Great for the Skin
Not only does omega-3 help to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the UV damage, but eating lots of fish can also help with the symptoms of skin conditions and itchiness. Fish is also a great source of protein, which is an essential ingredient of collagen, a substance which keeps the skin firm and flexible.
9. Good for down below
Evidence suggests that a diet rich in fish oils can help to protect against serious inflammatory bowel diseases. Eating a diet plentiful in fish oils can give dogs firmer stools.
10. Boosts brainpower
Fish can help to boost a dog’s brain power and development particularly in the puppy stage.
